New York JETS Baby Dress Take 2

Sometimes you get lucky, even when the odds are against you.

The day before I could give my friend the ripped up JETS baby dress before leaving for her cruise I decided that I had to find the thread I needed and put in those ruffles. I would take a half day from work, go to the garment district and buy my thread (and maybe some fabrics), and still have enough time to take the bus to pick up the boys from school.

Then the half day ended up much longer than expected. Scratch the gartment district. There is a store called Sew Right Sewing Machines near my kids’ school. Maybe I could go there before picking them up. Why didn’t think of that earlier? I got out from work late, so late that I didn’t think I could get to the school on time. Forget about getting the thread. Will I have to go to the police precinct to pick up my kids? Will they think I’m the worst mother in the world for not being on time?

The bus, as expected, was late, but there was not much I could do at the time, so I slept all the way. The bus driver must realize that I was in a hurry or he was also in a hurry. I would have enough time to walk to the school. I must have dozed off again because when I opened my eyes I realized I just went past the stop I was supposed to get off. Ok, I had to remain calm. I rang the bell, got off at the next stop, about 10 blocks past my kids’ school. I walked quickly toward the school and there it was, the sewing supply store. I walked in and found my thread and went to pick up the boys. To make the long story longer, here’s the much better version of the JETS baby dress:

Big Blue Baby Dress

Ok, so I couldn’t sleep without sewing up another dress with the New Look 6796 pattern using the Giants fabric I got from Jo-Ann’s remnant rack. This was going to be a pillow for the couch but after the Jets dress I’ll have to use this for another dress. The coordinating fabric is a Braemore medium weight cotton I got online a long time ago. I decided to try out the version with ruffles and it came out much nicer.

I felt that the Jets baby dress would have come out much nicer if I used ruffles even with the plain green fabric, so I ripped out the bottom. One minor problem… I don’t have anymore hunter green thread… Ok, there’s no need to panic…

J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS (shhhhh) Baby Dress

Ok, we’re 100% GIANTS fans. I gave a used GIANTS bodysuit to a friend of mine but didn’t realize that her husband is a JETS fan. I guess that’s a big no-no. So I decided to make their baby girl a JETS dress for the summer.

I originally saw this New York JETS fabric at Jo-Ann’s but it was at $12.99 per yard. Then the following week I stopped by and saw at the remnant rack that there was a small piece for 50% off, so I grabbed it. I didn’t know if I would have enough to make anything but I thought I would figure it out somehow. This fabric turns out to be very soft (unlike the GIANTS fabric I got also from the remnant rack), but I didn’t have enough fabric to make a dress! Then I saw New Look 6796.

I thought it would go really cute with some forest/hunter green with white polka dot fabric, but that turned out to be impossible to find. I went through my stash and found a hunter green medium weight cotton (from Joann’s remnant rack, again). Here’s what I came up with:

I’m kind of rushing this since my friend is leaving for a cruise trip in a week. Hopefully this would fit. I wanted R to try on to see if I need to make it bigger for her but she refused to let me put it on (since she’s also a GIANTS fan) until I said “it’s really pretty”… I guess as long as something is pretty, it doesn’t matter even if it’s a JETS dress.
